讲座题目：Does Literacy Education Matter for Career Outcomes? Evidence from Sell-Side Analysts
Abstract：We examine the impact of literacy education on the career outcomes of sell-side analysts. By utilizing a staggered syllabus reform in China, which transformed Chinese literacy from a political education tool to a basic communication tool, we employ a difference-in-differences approach. Our findings indicate that analysts who underwent the reform experience more frequent and faster promotions. The market also responds more strongly to recommendation revisions made by the treated analysts. Furthermore, these treated analysts exhibit a greater willingness to conduct site visits, aligning with the enhanced social skills and improved communication abilities that the reform aimed to cultivate. The results of the textual analysis indicate that reports authored by treated analysts demonstrate greater lexical and character richness, but not higher complexity. These findings support the notion that literacy education contributes to the improvement of individuals’ writing abilities. However, the impact of the reform on career outcomes is less pronounced for analysts hailing from northern Chinese provinces, where the local dialects bear a closer resemblance to Mandarin.
